Car Insurance For Music Tutors and Professional Musicians

As a private tutor, my business depends on being able to get around, which means that I had to shop around to find the right car insurance to meet my needs. What not many people realise is that number of miles they do in their car affects the quote they will get back for car insurance, as does the use that the vehicle is being put to.

Because I am a freelance music teacher working in a rural area, the miles I end up covering are huge, and the fact that I am using my vehicle for business as well as pleasure is a factor when it comes to the quotes I get back from companies. One of the questions I always have to raise when talking to a new advisor is about valuables left in the vehicle whilst unattended – I have quite a few instruments that I take around, and although always tucked away in the boot – I need my equipment to be covered should my car get broken into or stolen.

A shocking fact is that some car insurance companies won’t even insure me because of my profession. Professional musicians are an awkward category to cater for and considered quite high risk. This is probably to do with the assumption that a vehicle is going to be left outside a city centre venue late at night unattended, possibly with expensive musical equipment inside; Or the assumption that we are all wild party animals, and likely to trash a vehicle in one way or another.

Car insurance for teachers is likely to be down the lower end of the scale, being an altogether more responsible bunch than musicians in the eyes of insurers. Quite how much one of my professions balanced out the other when I got my quote, I can only wonder!
